COLUMBIA SPACE SHUTTLE DISASTER -- Part K
BASIC FUEL TANK CONFIGURATIONS
For planned missions -- manned or unmanned -- and/or to better suit in-flight conditions, it is often to the advantage of the mission to reduce weight by jettisoning one or more fuel tanks. The SIB-SE space craft has been designed by the SIBs to make such adjustments either while in flight or prior to launch. The following SIBRAY B shows four such configurations:
CONFIG 1: Shows the ship with all tanks in place for a typical manned or unmanned flight, etc.;
CONFIG 2: In the cases where, in flight, there is no necessity for additional launches, the "Launch Energy Storage Tanks" and the accompanying "Launch and At-Rest Stands" can be jettisoned to reduce flight weight and improve maneuverability;
CONFIG 3. In cases where to complete the mission, the fuel stored in the main tank and the launch tanks are adequate to complete the mission, the forward tanks can be jettisoned to conserve weight and drag and improve maneuverability by retaining the rear directional surfaces;
CONFIG 4. While in flight, if fuel in Main Tank is adequate to complete mission, all other tanks may be jettisoned.
