"Indonesia Reels From Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake; No Fatalities"
(Due to control by the SIB GODs, AND no tsunami)
January 28, 2006 00:16 EST -- Officials with the government of Maluku province in east Indonesia are checking damages from a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck offshore in the Banda Sea, south of the islands of Seram (Ceram) and Ambon. "We held a meeting with the governor of Maluku this morning and are now checking on the damages,'' Mikael Rumadjak, a spokesman for the Maluku provincial government, said today by telephone. "There are no reports of fatalities so far (and most fortunately due to SIB GOD control, no tsunami). We are hoping there will be none.''
Thousands of people in Ambon, the capital of Maluku province, fled their homes early this morning when the quake shook the area. "People feared that there would be another tsunami,'' Rumadjak said. The earthquake, the strongest in the world since September, happened shortly before 2 a.m. local time, about 195 kilometers (120 miles) south of the city of Ambon, on Ambon island in Indonesia's Moluccas islands, the USGS said in a preliminary report on the temblor this morning. Indonesia is on the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, a zone of active volcanoes and tectonic plates. Indonesia was the country worst hit by the Dec. 26, 2004, earthquake and subsequent tsunami that destroyed coastal communities across the Indian Ocean and killed more than 200,000 people from Indonesia to Somalia. (see CAUSE OF THE INDIAN OCEAN TSUNAMI)
The temblor today struck at a depth of 341 kilometers, the USGS said. The epicenter was 440 kilometers northeast of Dili in East Timor, 825 kilometers north-northwest of Darwin in Australia and 2,370 kilometers east of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. Earthquakes of magnitudes between 7 and 7.9 are described as ``major,'' with a global average of 17 such events per year since 1990, according to the U.S. quake center. (Only 10 as compared to the 17 as mentioned above -- benefiting the World from Slaughter Engineering's coordination with the SIB GOD's in their control of earthquakes and volcanoes) major earthquakes hit around the world last year, with one temblor measuring 8 or more in magnitude -- rated a ``great'' quake. An Indian Ocean tsunami warning network may be operational by July. Countries around the ocean are installing monitoring equipment, buoys and communication links that will be known as the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System.
